We Broke the “Rules” of
a Mountain Wedding

Getting married in the mountains does not mean you have to put a mountain on your invitation. There. I said it.

There’s a certain look we’ve come to expect from a mountain wedding. Muted greens. Rustic details. Watercolor landscapes. Maybe a pine tree or two for good measure.

But when your venue already comes with miles of Blue Ridge views, you don’t necessarily need your wedding design to remind everyone where they are.

Sometimes, the mountains can just be the backdrop.

For this High Country wedding, we didn’t start with a perfectly curated mood board or a palette with six carefully named shades. We started with one image of colorful florals. That was it.

And honestly? That was plenty.

We pulled from the feeling of it instead of trying to recreate it literally. Bright. Happy. Romantic. A little unexpected. The kind of color that feels collected rather than perfectly matched.

That became powder blue checks, punchy orange envelopes, pink typography, chartreuse wavy borders, oversized floral liners and vintage postage that brought even more color into the mix. There was a lot happening, but every piece had a reason to be there.

And then you see it all come together against the actual setting.

Bright pinks, oranges, yellows and blues surrounded by soft blue mountains. Saturated florals against acres of green. Playful paper details sitting right at home in a place that could have easily sent the entire design in a much more rustic direction.

That contrast is exactly what makes it work.

Your venue should absolutely be part of the conversation when you’re designing a wedding. But it doesn’t have to dictate the entire aesthetic.

A mountain wedding can be colorful. It can be playful. It can have pattern and personality and bright orange envelopes. It can feel completely at home in the High Country without a single mountain illustration making an appearance.

As a stationer, this is the kind of design freedom I love. Give me the feeling you want your wedding to have, even if all you have is one photo that you can’t stop thinking about. We can build from there.

Because your invitations aren’t supposed to be a literal picture of where you’re getting married. They’re the first glimpse into what it’s going to feel like to be there.
